Cerithioides was named by Haughton (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi C Bash Sepkoski's reference number: 362,797]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Murchisonia (Cerithioides) by Donald (1895).

It was assigned to Murchisonia by Donald (1895); to Murchisoniidae by Knight et al. (1960); to Goniasmidae by Nützel and Bandel (2000); and to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
