Laemophiurida was named by Matsumoto (1915). It is extant.

It was reranked as the suborder Laemophiurina by Spencer and Wright (1966) and Shone (1986).

It was assigned to Myophiuroida by Matsumoto (1915); to Ophiuroidea by Berry (1941); and to Ophiurida by Spencer and Wright (1966) and Shone (1986).

H. Matsumoto 1915Radial shield and genital plate articulate with each other by means of a transverse ridge or a simple facet on either plate, without well-developed articular condyles and sockets. Peristomal plates large, usually entire. Oral frames entire, without well-developed lateral wings. Dorsal arm plates often very small, while the lateral arm plates are very well developed, those of opposite sides usually meeting both above and below.
