Cirrus was named by Sowerby (1816) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn J Bath Sepkoski's reference number: 797]. It is the type genus of Cirrinae.

It was assigned to Cirridae by Cossmann (1916) and Cossmann (1916); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cirrinae by Bandel (1993) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
