Ferganobatrachus was named by Nessov (1991) [In the generic diagnosis, the taxon is misspelled "Gerganobtrachus"]. Its type is Ferganobatrachus riabinini.

It was assigned to Capitosauroidea by Nessov (1991); to Brachyopidae by Shishkin (2000); and to Brachyopoidea by Warren and Marsicano (2000).
