Taxonomy
Coelocaulus was named by Oehlert and Oehlert (1888) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-u D Emsi Sepkoski's reference number: 797]. It is not extant. Its type is Murchisonia davidsoni.

It was corrected as Coelocaeulus by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); it was reranked as Murchisonia (Coelocaulus) by Perner (1907); it was synonymized subjectively with Michelia by Knight et al. (1960).

It was assigned to Pleurotomariidae by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); to Murchisonia by Perner (1907); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Murchisoniidae by Rohr et al. (2003); and to Hormotomidae by Wagner (2023).
