Neritina was named by Lamarck (1816) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo R Sepkoski's reference number: 558]. It is extant. Its type is Nerita pulligera.

It was reranked as Nerita (Neritina) by Martin (1905); it was misspelled as Neretina by Vaughn (1921), Woodring (1957), Ladd (1966), Perrilliat (1972), Woodring (1973), Ladd (1982), Wilson (1993), Todd (2001), Harzhauser and Mandic (2001), Sepkoski (2002), Squires and Saul (2003), Bouchet et al. (2005) and Landau et al. (2016).

It was assigned to Nerita by Martin (1905); to Neritinae by Woodring (1957), Perrilliat (1972), Woodring (1973) and Wilson (1993); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Neritidae by Vaughn (1921), Ladd (1966), Ladd (1982), Todd (2001), Harzhauser and Mandic (2001) and Squires and Saul (2003); and to Neritininae by Bouchet et al.
