Glyptotomaria was named by Knight (1945) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise Tr Anis Sepkoski's reference number: 115,797]. Its type is Glyptotomaria apiarium.

It was assigned to Pleurotomariacea by Erwin (1989); to Phymatopleuridae by Knight et al. (1960) and Kues and Batten (2001); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gosseletininae by Wagner (2017).
