Halistylus was named by Dall (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio-u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Halistylinae.

It was assigned to Umboniinae by da Silva Forti (1969); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Halistylinae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
