Astraraea fungiformis was named by Beauvais (1979). Its type locality is Steeple Ashton reef, England, which is in an Oxfordian reef, buildup or bioherm rudstone in the Steeple Ashton Coral Bed Formation of the United Kingdom.

Beauvais 1979Small, fungiform, thamnastierioid and very flat corallum. Inferior surface exhibiting a fossula of attachment situa ted on the edge and growth wrinkles arranged in semicircle around this point ofattachment.
Thick and wrinkled but worn holoth eca, revea ling thin, densely spaced and subequal costae. Calicular surface slightly concave, exhibiting small, numerous, superficial corallites densely spaced and not bounded by a wall. Biseptal sheets irregularly perforated and exhibiting numberous divergent trabeculae. Moniliform upper margin. Lateral septal faces not visible. Endotheca made of thin dissepiments. Synapticulae are quite numerous, they are single or compound, often joined in horizontal ripples (menianes of G. Gill).
Small trabecular columella, absent in some corallites. No wall.
