Koilomorpha was named by Alloiteau (1952).

It was synonymized subjectively with Pironastrea by Baron-Szabo (2008).

It was assigned to Scleractinia by El-Asa'ad (1991); to Thamnasteriidae by Baron-Szabo (2002); and to Siderastraeidae by Kiessling (2014).
