Liotia was named by Gray (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R]. It is extant. Its type is Delphinula cancellata.

It was assigned to Gastropoda by Mansfield (1925); to Turbinidae by Gardner (1947) and Abbass (1967); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Liotiinae by MacNeil (1960), Perrilliat (1972) and Bouchet et al. (2005); and to Liotiidae by Gray (1850), Gardner (1948) and Nielsen (2013).
