Lirularia was named by Dall (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio-u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Lirulariinae.

It was reranked as Margarites (Lirularia) by Oldroyd (1925) and Berry (1941).

It was assigned to Margarites by Oldroyd (1925) and Berry (1941); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lirulariinae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
