Nucula gallinacea was named by Finlay (1930) [TYPE LOCALITY: Recent, New Zealand]. It is extant. It is the type species of Varinucula.
It was recombined as Varinucula gallinacea by Maxwell (1992) and Spencer et al. (2004).
