Ennucula whatu was named by Maxwell (1992) [TYPE LOCALITY: McCulloch's Bridge, South Island, New Zealand; Kaiatan, Eocene. TYPE REPOSITORY: GSNZ, New Zealand.]. Its type specimen is TM 6957 and is not a trace fossil.
