Sareptidae was named by Adams (1860). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Nuculanidae by Parker (1982).

It was assigned to Nuculanacea by Maxwell (1992); to Sareptoidea by Nevesskaja (2009) and Huber (2010); and to Nuculanoidea by Todd (2001), Anelli et al. (2006) and Carter et al. (2011).
