Luciella was named by de Koninck (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife Tr Carn Sepkoski's reference number: 362,797]. Its type is Pleurotomaria eliana. It is the type genus of Luciellidae.

It was reranked as Pleurotomaria (Luciella) by Perner (1907).

It was assigned to Pleurotomaria by Perner (1907); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Luciellidae by Knight et al. (1960) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
