Cathartesaura was named by Gallina and Apesteguía (2005). Its type is Cathartesaura anaerobica.
It was assigned to Limaysaurinae by Whitlock (2011), Carballido et al. (2012), Mannion et al. (2012), Ibiricu et al. (2015), Wilson and Allain (2015) and Mannion et al. (2019); and to Rebbachisauridae by Gallina and Apesteguía (2005), Mannion (2009), Carballido et al. (2010), Mannion et al. (2011), Ibiricu et al. (2012), Haluza et al. (2012), Motta et al. (2016) and Paulina-Carabajal and Calvo (2021).
