Taxonomy
Vermetus papulosa was named by Guppy (1866). Its type specimen is BMNH 64081 and is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Serpulorbis papulosa by Olsson (1922) and Anderson (1929); it was recombined as Lemintina papulosa by Woodring (1928); it was recombined as Vermetus (Lemintina) papulosus by Rutsch (1934); it was recombined as Serpulorbis papulosus by Weisbord (1929), Woodring (1959), Weisbord (1962) and Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
