Taxonomy
Asfaltomylos was named by Rauhut et al. (2002). Its type is Asfaltomylos patagonicus. It was considered monophyletic by Rauhut et al. (2002) and Rougier et al. (2007).
It was assigned to Australosphenida by Rauhut et al. (2002), Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004) and Martin and Rauhut (2005); and to Henosferidae by Rougier et al. (2007).

| O. W. M. Rauhut et al. 2002 | "small holotherian mammal with fully basined talonids, with hypoconid and hypoconulid at the molars (broken on M1). Trigonids are lingually open, the trigonid angle of M1 is about 1308 (obtuse), and forM2 andM3 it is about 808 (acute). All preserved teeth are double-rooted, M1±M3 with faint lingual cingulid at the base of the paraconid. There is no distal metacristid present on the talonids. The tooth formula of the mandible is: ?I, ?C, 3+P, 3M. The dentary is slender with a gently rising coronoid process. The angular process is posteroventrally positioned and the dental foramen is placed far towards the anterior (below the origin of the coronoid process). There is no developed pterygoid fossa. A shallow post-dentary trough is present, subdivided by longitudinal striations. Meckel's groove is not detectable." |
