Morphotropis was named by Perner (1903) [Sepkoski's age data: S u D Emsi Sepkoski's reference number: 1005]. It is not extant. Its type is Morphotropis aliena.

It was reranked as Euomphalus (Morphotropis) by Spitz (1907).

It was assigned to Euomphalus by Spitz (1907); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Oriostomatidae by Knight et al. (1960), Linsley and Kier (1984) and Wagner (2017).
