Taxonomy
Aviculopinna americana was named by Meek (1867) [TYPE LOCALITY: United States; Late Carboniferous.]. It is the type species of Meekopinna.

It was recombined as Pteronites americana by Hoare et al. (1979); it was recombined as Meekopinna americana by Yancey (1978) and Anelli et al. (2006).
