Orthonychia was named by Hall (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov Tr Ladi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 362,797]. It is not extant. Its type is Orthonychia subrectum.

It was reranked as Capulus (Orthonychia) by Whidborne (1896); it was reranked as Platyceras (Orthonychia) by Knight et al. (1960).

It was assigned to Capulus by Whidborne (1896); to Platyceras by Knight et al. (1960); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Orthonychiidae by Bandel and Frýda (1999) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
