Otostoma was named by d'Archaic (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: J u T Eo-m Sepkoski's reference number: 615,909,914].

It was assigned to Neritinae by Allison (1955), Kase (1984), Squires and Saul (1993), Squires (1995) and Saul and Squires (1997); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Neritidae by Squires and Saul (2001) and Bandel and Kiel (2003).
