Squalodon linzianus was named by Brandt (1871) [Kellogg (1923) states that the specimen is in the Museum Francisco-Carolinum at Linz, Austria.]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Linz, which is in a Chattian open shallow subtidal sandstone in the Linzer Sanden Formation of Austria.
It was synonymized subjectively with Patriocetus ehrlichi by Abel (1914).
