Palaeocollonia was named by Kittl (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-u J Bajo Sepkoski's reference number: 909,1066]. Its type is Margarita laevigata.

It was assigned to Crossostomatidae by Conti and Szabó (1987); and to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
