Pleurotomaria (Palaeoschisma) was named by Donald (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l O Ashg-m]. Its type is Pleurotomaria (Palaeoschisma) girvanense.

It was synonymized subjectively with Clathrospira by Knight et al. (1960); it was reranked as Palaeoschisma by Sepkoski (2002) and Wagner (2017).

It was assigned to Pleurotomaria by Donald (1902); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Eotomariinae by Wagner (2017).
