Taxonomy
Palaeotrochus was named by Hall (1879) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg D Emsi Sepkoski's reference number: 362,797]. Its type is Pleurotomaria kearnyi. It is the type genus of Palaeotrochidae.

It was reranked as Trochus (Palaeotrochus) by Clarke (1885).

It was assigned to Trochus by Clarke (1885); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeotrochidae by Knight et al. (1960) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
