Penion was named by Fischer (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani R Sepkoski's reference number: 530,728,899]. It is extant. Its type is Kelletia dilatata.

It was assigned to Buccinidae by Palmer and Brann (1966), Zinsmeister (1983) and Beu et al. (1990); to Buccininae by Wilson (1994); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
