Murex ternatanus was named by Gmelin (1791). It is extant.

It was recombined as Hemifusus (Hemifusus) ternatanus by Oostingh (1935); it was recombined as Hemifusus ternatanus by Dheeradilok et al. (1984); it was recombined as Volema (Hemifusus) ternatanus by Rosenberg et al. (2006).
