Taxonomy
Phymatopleura was named by Girty (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour P Guad Sepkoski's reference number: 797]. Its type is Orestes nodosus. It is the type genus of Phymatopleuridae.

It was reranked as Pleurotomaria (Phymatopleura) by Reed (1944).

It was assigned to Pleurotomaria by Reed (1944); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Phymatopleuridae by Batten (1956), Knight et al. (1960), Bouchet et al. (2005) and Karapunar and Nützel (2022).
