Pileolus was named by Sowerby (1823) [Sepkoski's age data: J l T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. Its type is Pileolus obliqua. It is the type genus of Pileolidae.

It was assigned to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pileolidae by Bandel et al. (2000) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
