Ostrea nodosa was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Pleistocene-Recent; Western Atlantic]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Pecten (Nodipecten) nodosus by Dall (1898); it was recombined as Nodipecten nodosa by Dall (1898); it was recombined as Pecten (Lyropecten) nodosus by Perry (1940); it was recombined as Chlamys (Nodipecten) nodosus by DuBar (1958); it was recombined as Lyropecten nodosus by McGinty (1970) and Callapez and Ferreira Soares (2000); it was recombined as Nodipecten nodosus by Rosenberg (2005).
