Plesiothyreus was named by Cossmann (1888) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 615]. It is extant. Its type is Capulus parmophoroides.

It was assigned to Phenacolepadidae by Lozouet et al. (2001); and to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
