Murex haneti was named by Petit (1856) [Type Locality: Près Rio-Janeiro [Boa Viagem Island, Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro State, 22°54'43"S, 43°07'32"W (F. H. A. Costa 1993)]
Range: 21°S to 39°S; 62°W to 40.5°W
Depth: 0 to 55 m (live 0 to 22 m)
Maximum Reported Size: 37 mm
Distribution: Brazil: Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Parana, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul; Argentina: Buenos Aires]. It is extant. It is the type species of Hanetia.
It was recombined as Hanetia haneti by Jousseume (1880); it was recombined as Urosalpinx haneti by Rosenberg (2005).
