Taxonomy
Polytremaria was named by d'Orbigny (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise Sepkoski's reference number: 615,797]. Its type is Pleurotomaria catenata. It is the type genus of Polytremariinae.

It was assigned to Polytremariinae by Wenz (1938); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Polytremariidae by Knight et al. (1960) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
