Volaticotherium was named by Meng et al. (2006). Its type is Volaticotherium antiquus. It was considered monophyletic by Meng et al. (2006).
It was assigned to Volaticotherini by Gaetano and Rougier (2011); and to Volaticotheriidae by Meng et al. (2006) and Averianov and Lopatin (2011).
