Hesperisternia was named by Gardner (1944). It is extant. Its type is Hesperisternia waltonia.

It was reranked as Cantharus (Hesperisternia) by Robinson (1991).

It was assigned to Fasciolariidae by Gardner (1947); to Cantharus by Robinson (1991); and to Pisaniinae by Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
