Orientolophus was named by Ting (1993). Its type is Orientolophus hengdongensis.

It was synonymized subjectively with Hyracotherium by Lucas and Kondrashov (2004).

It was assigned to Lophodontomorpha by Hooker and Dashzeveg (2004).
