Taxonomy
Deinogalerix freudenthali was named by Butler (1980). It is not extant. Its type specimen is RGM 178100, M1 sup. dext., a tooth. Its type locality is Biancone, which is in a Vallesian/Turolian fissure fill limestone in Italy.

P. M. Butler 1980Much smaller than D. koenigswaldi. M1 (holotype) measures 7.7 mm in buccal length. and 9.8 mm in anterior width. It also differs from D. koenigswaldi as follows: hypocone of P4 not divided; posterobuccal corner of M4 less extended, so that the buccal edge of P4 is shorter relatively to M1; posterior cingulum of M1 and M2 interrupted in some specimens by the posterior crest of the metaconule; M3 less reduced in size in comparison to M1.
