Pecten mirificus was named by Reeve (1853). It is extant. It is the type species of Mirapecten.
It was recombined as Pecten (Mirapecten) mirificus by Ladd and Hoffmeister (1945); it was recombined as Mirapecten mirificus by Dijkstra and Kilburn (2001) and Rosenberg et al. (2006).
