It was synonymized subjectively with Sauranodontidae by Kuhn (1946); it was synonymized subjectively with Sphenodontidae by Cocude-Michel (1963); it was reranked as the family Sapheosauridae by Kuhn (1966) and Benton (1985); it was reranked as the family Saphaeosauridae by Herrera-Flores et al. (2018).
