Trochus (Scalaetrochus) was named by Etheridge (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 362]. Its type is Scalaetrochus lindstroemi.

It was reranked as Scalaetrochus by Knight et al. (1960) and Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Trochus by Etheridge (1890); to Pseudophoridae by Knight et al. (1960); and to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
