Scutus was named by Monfort (1810) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. It is extant. Its type is Scutus antipodes.

It was assigned to Emarginulinae by Knight et al. (1960); to Fissurellidae by Ladd (1966) and Short and Potter (1987); to Emarginulidae by Wilson (1993); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Scutini by Bouchet et al. (2005).
