Fusus niponicus was named by Smith (1879). It is extant.

It was recombined as Granulifusus nipponicus by Eisenberg (1981) and Springstein and Leobrera (1986); it was recombined as Fusinus niponicus by Abbott and Dance (1982); it was recombined as Granulifusus niponicus by MacNeil (1960), Kira (1965), Lindner (1976), Noda (1980) and Robba et al. (1989).
