Smaragdia was named by Issel (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 557]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Neritina (Smaragdia) by Maury (1917).

It was assigned to Neritina by Maury (1917); to Neritidae by Weisbord (1962), Ladd (1966), Ladd (1982) and Todd (2001); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Smaragdiinae by Gardner (1947), Perrilliat (1972), Wilson (1993) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
