Afrotarsiidae was named by Ginsburg and Mein (1987) [The family Afrotarsiidae was erected in a nonchalant fashion in this paper, on p. 1215: "Il [Afrotarsius] represente une famille a part, les Afrotarsiidae nov., caracterisee par des molaires inferieurs primitives d'un type proche des m1 et m2 de Tarsius, mais a m3 morphologiquement identique a m1 et m2, et plus petite." ]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Chaimanee et al. (2012).
It was assigned to Anthropoidea by Jaeger et al. (2010); and to Anthropoidea by Kay et al. (2004) and Chaimanee et al. (2012).
