Cacajao was named by Lesson (1840). It is extant. Its type is Simia melanocephala.

It was assigned to Pithecinae by Hershkovitz (1974); to Pitheciinae by Barnett (2005); and to Pitheciidae by Opazo et al. (2006).

  • Brachyurus was named by Spix (1823) [non Brachyurus Fischer 1813]. It is extant.

    It was replaced with Cothurus by Palmer (1899); it was replaced with Neocothurus by Palmer (1903); it was replaced with Cacajao by Barnett (2005).
  • Cercoptochus was named by Gloger (1842). It is extant.
