Callimico was named by Miranda-Ribeiro (1911). It is extant. It is the type genus of Callimiconidae.

It was assigned to Callimiconinae by Hill (1959); to Callimiconidae by Hershkovitz (1974); and to Callitrichinae by Opazo et al. (2006).
