Aotus was named by Illiger (1811). It is extant. It is the type genus of Aotini.
It was assigned to Quadrumana by Illiger (1811); to Aotinae by Hershkovitz (1974); to Pitheciinae by Setoguchi and Rosenberger (1987); to Aotidae by Wilson and Reeder (2005); to Cebinae by Opazo et al. (2006); and to Aotini by Cooke et al. (2011).
