Stomatella was named by Lamarck (1816) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 909]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Stomatellinae.
It was assigned to Margaritinae by MacNeil (1960); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stomatellinae by Wilson (1993) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
